Cash not received at ATM but account debited? What to Do
It is impossible to maintain smooth flow of cash across country without ATM. Automated Teller Machines, have wide network spread across India. You can find ATM at all the places including lanes, shopping malls and where not. However, this digitization of cash dispensing mechanism has its own disadvantages too, such as at ATM cash is dispensed late or amount is debited from account but not received.
When you use your card at some ATM machine, money from your account gets debited but machine does not dispense cash. In such cases, your account is credited money back instantly. But what to do when the amount is not dispensed through ATM and the transaction status in your account shows as debited? Well, you don’t have to be worried about such instances as banks will always reverse debited amount back to your account. However, you will have to take some immediate actions to claim your money back.
What to do when account is debited but cash is not received at ATM
Keep the generated transaction slip of debited amount with you. If you didn’t receive the slip then get a mini statement of last five transactions from any of the ATM machine. How to generate mini statement at ATM?
After you swipe your debit card in the machine, you will be presented with the screen of available options.
Step 1: Select Mini Statement option
Step 2: Select type of account i.e., ‘Savings Account’ or ‘Current Account’
Step 3: Enter your 4 digit PIN number
This will generate mini statement for last 5 transactions done on your account. You will receive a transaction slip.
Now you will have to write an application addressing to the branch manager of your bank. Even if the amount was debited from some other bank’s ATM, you still have to intimate your own bank to claim debited money back.
What should be the body of application to claim back debited cash at ATM?
Mention subject as
‘Regarding amount debited from account at ATM withdrawal transaction but did not receive cash’
You will have to keep following things ready for application
- ATM Card Number (16 digits)
- Date & Time of transaction
- Amount of transaction
- Mini statement of your account with concerning transaction
- Your registered mobile number
In the main body, you will have to mention your account number, ATM card number (16 digit number on the front side of your ATM card). Date of transaction and amount of transaction. Also mention the place and ATM machine details in the application.

Don’t forget to change the subject as mentioned above and change the actual body of application.
Sign at the bottom of the application letter and submit the same at your bank. Your bank will raise the issue with the concerned bank and your debited money will be back in your account within 3 working days.

Some ATMs can have bug of dispensing cash late. So if you are in hurry, you might lose your cash ATM if you leave too early. It is better to wait for some extra time and only after ensuring your transaction is completed, leave the place.
In such scenario, you don’t have any other option than waiting for banks to open. However, be ready with the application letter and quickly submit it to your bank on the day banks open.
You should always check the screen of ATM, if the screen displays transaction is still processing then you should not leave the place. You can also look at the card insert slot, if the green light is blinking and screen is prompting to enter your card then you can leave the ATM premises.
In some cases your debited amount will automatically get reversed back into your account within 48 hours. However, if it takes longer than that, you should visit your bank.
